We are very proud to offer our unique classes in Okinawan Karate for children aged from 5 years onwards. These formative years are perhaps the most important in a child's development, for it is here that behavioural traits are learnt and made habitual to then be carried over into youth. Developing good character, discipline and self-esteem at this early stage will stand a child in good stead for the increasing difficulties our children face as they move into secondary education, and the added pressures that this can often bring.
Many parents are keen to get their children into martial arts so that they can learn to ‘look after themselves’. This is a very common phrase that one hears as a teacher. However, let me state for the record that I believe this is more a by-product of the training rather than the goal. The focus of our classes is geared toward healthy balanced physical and mental development, which can have very positive effects upon other areas of a child's life, schooling, and recreational activities.
Our classes incorporate various elements of traditional Okinawan Karate, with the right amount of fun and games to ensure a positive learning atmosphere and retain the child’s attention and enthusiasm. Technical detail is delivered through a combination of warm-up, stretching & mobility, repetition of techniques to develop motor-skills, co-ordination & balance, pad-work, games and challenges. We do not encourage sparring or contact work at this age group.
Regular practise in martial arts is proven to have a positive effect upon a child’s development, instilling various qualities such as discipline, self-esteem, respect, teamwork, leadership, good manners, self-control, and improved physical development. In addition they can learn useful skills in dealing with confrontation, anti-bullying, and threat awareness.
Children are encouraged to excel both within and outside of the dojo, and personal accomplishments are celebrated within the group.
Classes are held at Cranham Social Hall, Front Lane, Upminster RM14 1XN every Tuesday & Friday 4.30 - 5.30pm.
